A grocery in happier times

Grocery Abandoned

Customers at Wellfresh Fruit & Veg in Durham were astonished yesterday when owner-manager Jennie Harris disappeared in front of their eyes. Said regular customer Mikos Spoonis, owner of Mik the Greek’s restaurant on the same street:

I always go in on the way to work to buy a banana. It sets me up for the day. But today I didn’t get to the front of the queue before she vanished completely. Right in front of our eyes.

I didn’t know whether to take the banana or not, so I weighed it myself and left 21p on the counter. You’ve got to support independent businesses even if their owners have disappeared.

Fellow customer Mary Duggan agrees:

I left £2.36 for some leeks and carrots. Oh, you mean about the disappearance? Yes, it was weird. One minute she was there, the next she was gone. Right in front of our eyes.

There was debate among the customers about whether there were any suspicious circumstances. Gerry McCrear, originally of Glasgow, said something about an “atmosphere” of something-or-other, although the recording isn’t clear. All are agreed that it had been quite hard to find fresh mangoes, a fact Harris had admitted shortly before her disappearance.
